Atop the hill of Turó de la Rovira, in the Carmel neighborhood, sits one of Barcelona’s most unique attractions. The Bunkers of Carmel are a natural lookout point offering bird’s eye views of this amazing city.

Sitting 262 meters above sea level, and offering unbeatable 360-degree views, the hill of Turó de la Rovira was used as a strategic location for the defense during the Spanish Civil War.

In the spring of 2015, with the support of the Barcelona City History Museum, MUHBA, the site morphed into new exhibition space, presenting a synthesized and panoramic view of the city of Barcelona, and exploring its role during the war and postwar years through the style and structure of the anti-aircraft fortifications and cannons built there. The site’s “Espai de Comandament” demonstrates the complicated relationship between modern technology and aerial warfare and the way this plays out in large and densely packed cities.

A spectacle in and of itself, this is an amazing place to contemplate the sunset as it falls over the city, and watch the bustling urban night light up from the streets below.

  • Espectacular
